Cat Matthews

Cat Matthews, born and raised in Los Angeles, is continuing the long tradition of California songwriters for a generation that only read about the Troubadour in 1972. The 24-year-old found fans early on with a 4-track cassette EP made with a friend during her first year at NYU. After garnering a little success, she dropped out to tour the US with artists like The Marias, Cuco, and Role Model.

The tour (and duo) were cut short when she was hospitalized due to a torn trachea.  After vocal cord surgery, she spent 3 months without the ability to speak, not knowing if she would be able to sing the same again. It was during this period of silence that she began hearing songs in her head. She would sit at the piano and imagine the words—imagining the world they would exist in, what she would sound like singing them.

This album is that collection of songs. All done live, to tape, with no tune or technology, just like the California writers from another time.
